Judge Rejects Trump's Attempt to Dismiss Defamation Lawsuit by E. Jean Carroll, Who Accused Him of Rape
Former President Donald Trump's legal troubles continue as a federal judge has denied his request to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll, a woman who accused Trump of rape. In 2019, Carroll claimed that Trump had raped her in the mid-1990s, a claim that Trump denied and called "fiction" and "totally false."
In response, Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump, arguing that his denials had damaged her reputation and career. Trump's legal team argued that he was immune from the lawsuit because he was acting in his official capacity as president when he made the statements.
However, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected that argument, ruling that Trump's statements were not made in his official capacity and that he could be sued for defamation. The case will now move forward to the discovery phase, where both sides will gather evidence and prepare for trial.
The ruling is a blow to Trump, who has faced numerous accusations of sexual assault and harassment over the years. It also highlights the ongoing legal challenges facing the former president, who is under investigation by multiple state and federal authorities for a variety of alleged wrongdoing.
