White House Advisor Suggests 14th Amendment Could Bar
A senior adviser to President Joe Biden has suggested that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution could be used to bar former President Donald Trump from holding public office again. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said that Section 3 of the amendment, which prohibits individuals who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding office, could apply to Trump in light of his role in the January 6th Capitol riot.
Klain's comments come as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced the formation of a select committee to investigate the events leading up to and on January 6th, and the actions of Trump and other officials during the insurrection.
While there is debate among legal experts about the constitutionality of using the 14th Amendment in this way, Klain's remarks indicate that the Biden administration is open to exploring all possible avenues to hold Trump accountable for his actions. Trump has denied any responsibility for the Capitol riot, and has been widely criticized for spreading false claims of election fraud that many believe contributed to the violence.
